What Motivates You?

Thursday, February 15, 2024

Have you ever wondered why you look forward to certain aspects of your job, but dread other parts? Or why you enjoy working with certain types of people, but find it annoying working with others?

There's actually a "Science" behind what motivates you and what demotivates you, and we use that science to support the Shape Motivation theory.

For example, a Primary Triangle who "just wants to get the job done and move on," may find it annoying, or "demotivating" working with a Primary Box, who would rather take a little more time to make sure the job's "done right."

On the other hand, the responsible and detail-oriented Box may find it frustrating, or demotivating, to work with the fast-paced and bottom-line Triangle because taking a "short-cut" may compromise the quality of the work.

This is because each of us have a Primary and Secondary Shape that makes up our natural way of working and communicating, and human nature causes us to resist anything that's opposite of our natural tendencies. This is what leads to our personal motivation or lack of motivation. See the chart below for what motivates and demotivates your Shape.
